One day in Sirmione

Sirmione is an amazing pearl on lake Garda you should visit: it is situated at the bottom end of Lake Garda and juts out into the lake on a thin peninsula. A Scaglieri castle dominates the town like so many other resorts on Lake Garda, but here old drawbridge is the only way in to an absolutely charming pedestrian only town surrounded by the waters of Lake Garda.

During the centuries Sirmione amazed many influential artists like Gaius Valerius Catullus who lived in the 1st century BC. His family owned a villa in Sirmione whose ruins are one of the most visited spots in town. Later on, Alfred Tennyson described in a poem his impressions of Sirmione in the summer of 1880. Italian writers who wrote about Sirmione include Giosuè Carducci, Antonio Fogazzaro and Gabriele D’Annunzio. But also Ezra Pound and James Joyce fell in love with the city in 1920 while divine opera singer Maria Callas had a villa in Sirmione.
